The most influential voyages of all time were launched on a misunderstanding. When Columbus set sail from Spain in 1492, he had no intention of seeking out new lands. He was trying to reach China and India by a western sea route. And even after he landed on islands off the coast of America, he continued to believe that he was close to the realms of the Great Khan. COLUMBUS THE ACCIDENTAL HERO tells the thrilling and little-known story of the reality behind the myth, and replaces the story-book Columbus by the much more fascinating and complex man who found the New World and changed our planet forever.

Columbus the Accidental Hero Single eBook Kevin Jackson

Book gives detailed account of the events in the life of Columbus during his famous voyages.

Yet, it a very well written in a non-academic style to make reading a pleasure.

To me this book completely changes the story about "Spanish court betraying and robbing Columbus".
That story was good for drama in the plays and in the movies, but it turns out that it is far from reality, where after his first voyage was permitted, Columbus had support of the crown with only minor, considering what was at stake, hiccups due to misunderstanding. And those wrongs were corrected as soon as Queen Isabella learned of them.

Instead I learned much more about the hardship of his travels and ailments, brought to him courtesy of mother nature.

Although, there is one point on which book contradicts even its own title.

Facts in the book show again and again that Columbus was a superb navigator well aware of the shape of the earth.

He, no doubt, was aware of the size of the Earth as well and was capable to estimate the distance to China and Japan in travels to the East through Asia.

It means that he, as many other learned people in Europe at that time, had a good estimate of the huge distance between Spain in Japan for the western voyage.

Yet, he equipped his fleet for the 1/3rd of that distance and he and his crew fully expected to find the "India" after 1/3rd of the distance they knew very well lays between Spain and the China.

His claiming Cuba for Spanish crown is another contradiction to the statement that Columbus thought that Cuba is Sipangu/Japan. It is dangerous and counterproductive to claim parts of the powerful kingdom as your own. Apparently Columbus realized that it is not a Japan at all and he does not have to look for local authorities and ask for trading permits.

Then what is the story with "India"?
Could it be a deliberate disinformation of the Spaniards to avert Portuguese agents, which became part of the "history" because it was repeated too many times, facts be damned?

Columbus the Accidental Hero Single eBook Kevin Jackson Reviews

Nothing very exciting in this account. I'm sure that the actual voyage must have been filled with moments of doubt as well as some dramatic experiences that are not mentioned and which I expected to discover by reading this story but it is onl yan account of a voyage that appears to be mainly smooth sailing which it could not have been any any manner of means
The book gives us a short description of what was the Columbus saga. Despite the book name, it seems clear that his utmost determination and a strange and outrageous belief made him one of the most important personalities in History. The book could have more epic details and descriptions to help the reader to put herself in the Columbus time. I do recommend the book as an introductory text about Columbus and the beginning of America as we know it.
As a avid history buff, I like this book very much! The best of Columbus in a long time! Any history student would love this read!
Far from being a despot Columbus was one of the greatest mariners of all time, but a terrible administrator, manager and politician who often faced rebellions from his subjects and mutinies from his soldiers. He was replaced as governor of every colony he founded. Those governors, mostly Oveda of Hispanola were cruel Spanish despots.
Nice, well-balanced narrative of one of the most important men of the millennium. Kevin Jackson points out Columbus' moments of integrity along with his many flaws. Of course this enrages the extremists as can be seen in some of the one-star comments. This is not an exhaustive work, but it does give insight into what caused Columbus to make many of his questionable decisions.

The title of the book refers to Columbus' discovery as the accidental uncovering of a new continent, and the fact that he was famous after returning from his first voyage. I'm not sure why that obvious interpretation is causing such controversy unless some reviews have not, in fact, bothered to read the book yet.
A little choppy but he gets you the information you need to know in a fairly concise fashion and you get a good feel for Columbus although not many of the other of the major characters in the story. He spends only a short time musing on the ethics of the man which is good because we generally spend too much time in that fruitless endeavor in most history books. Columbus was a man of his age, not noticeably worse or better than most of his contemporaries. The native Americans are not noticeably different in ethics except that they lost most of the time. This book will probably make want you to read a longer and more detailed account, but if you want to get the basics of the story, this is your book.
A hard driving, well researched account of the adventures (what else could you call them) of a man whose name is universally known. My main take from this book was that this one of the luckiest men in history. Time and time again he just happened to be in the right place at the right time. His timing in his relations in the royal courts of two nations was nothing less than Providential. His crossings and recrossings of the Atlantic were nearly miraculous, considering the size, design, and condition of his ships. It is in the end of his life that his luck finally runs out.

Author Jackson packs a tremendous amount of detail in a short read. He permits the reader to see as Columbus saw his circumstances. I recommend this book to anyone who is not an expert on the Discoverer of America.
