New, revised edition!

With virtually no experience and absolutely no support, Adrian rides a basic stock motorbike 20,000kms across nine countries in three months to fulfill a lifelong dream. He sets off from the bleak, windswept former gulag gateway city of Magadan in a remote corner of Siberia, but before the day is out he crashes badley, breaking his bike and seriously injuring himself. He is completely alone. He struggles on through swamps, bogs and mud tracks and nearly drowns in the icy rapids along Stalin's infamous Road of Bones. Although it is summer in Siberia, it is freezing and the driving rain is relentless. When the sun does appear, he is attacked by fierce squadrons of giant mosquitoes and, with wild bears roaming, he cannot stop, often riding for days at a time. Sheer physical strength saves his life on numerous occasions. He battles on deep into central Russia, across the vast Steppes of Kazakhstan and on through the scaring Taklimakan Desert in remote western China. He scales the breathtaking Pamirs and rides across the roof of the world before entering the fabled Silk Road cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Chive. He scurries across oddball Turkmenism, and on across ancient Persia before finally arriving at his destination, exotic Istanbul. At every turn, Adrian is adopted by a vast array of characters, each with stories to tell and who, extraordinarily, expect nothing in return; tough Siberian truck drivers, frontier road workers, border guards desperate villagers, drug-addled soldiers and crazy modern-day traders, each insisting that he join them in their homes to share their lives and most of their provisions. It is these encounters which provide such a rich and compelling subtext to his extraordinary journey.

The Road Gets Better From Here eBook Adrian Scott

This is way more than a "Motorcycle Trip story". I own the same model Motorcycle that he rode, so I thought it would be an interesting read. But it's really not about the motorcycle. Sure, there's some MC related content, but it's more about how a guy can go almost anywhere and get into the lives of the people around him and really get a glimpse of their world. People are incredibly kind to him, which kind of again proves to me that our governments can create wars with the bad guys and politics that drive nations apart, but when it comes down to people to people, it still works!

The Road Gets Better From Here eBook Adrian Scott Reviews

I really enjoyed the book from the beginning till the end, with it's long string of otherwise unlikely human encounters in the most remote places, which shows us that we are all part of the same humankind.

Despite some not very happy reviewers, I bought the book and read it for what it is - a travelogue written by a motorcyclist, with his own ideas, views, thoughts and feelings about what he has experienced first hand in places one may only dream of travelling through some day - which is what I expected to find in a book about a long journey on two wheels.
This was a good book but not what I was expecting. I'm a huge fan of the motorcycle travel genre and expected more writing about motorcycles. Adrian Scott is a good writer and this is a good travel book but he might as well have been taking trains for all the motorcycle references. However I give huge kudos to anyone who can start, let alone finish, a trip such as his! I just hope anyone who attempts a trip like this knows a little more about their motorcycle than Mr. Scott.
I am a motorcyclist and an avid reader of travel books but I have never been moved to write a review until now. This is a superb book, but, in Lance's words, it's not about the bike. In fact, he doesn't give us any info about the bike except that it's a Kawasaki. It doesn't matter (most adventure motorcyclists will be able to figure out which bike he used). What is truly astounding is the way Adrian writes about the places & people he meets along the way. It is remarkable how he uses the power of the written word to draw the places & people in your mind's eye. It's as if you were right there with him it is so vividly described. Once you get past the obvious dearth of editorial "oversight" (syntax, typos, etc), the read gets better from here....in fact incredibly better. Anyone interested in humanity, never mind travel or motorcycles, should read this book.
Just finished Mr. Scott's book and my only disappointment is I don't have anymore to read! He is an articulate and gifted writer which he'll probably agree out weigh his motorcycling skills- especially when it comes to repairs. But anyone that has completed the grueling 20,000km that he has knows what he's doing. It is all the more amazing that he did this on his own with no support vehicle (well not his anyway) like the Long Way Round boys. I found myself looking for more information on his motorcycle and preparation but this is a story just about the trip and, more importantly, the people. He paints many pictures of heart-felt encounters that emphasize we are all just citizens of the world. BTW- I did find the specifics I was looking for on his web site www dot adrianscott dot com dot au Bravo Adrian!
Being an author of only one book and being slammed by others because they did not like the way i went about writing it is painful...so I am not going to do that.
Overall the book was a good book but with some very very stupid ideas in the way he laid the book out.
1. Very poor info that is necessary when writing a book of this kind for instance....... No indication until very late in the book of what kind of bike he was even riding!!!!!!!!!!
2. EXTREMELY POOR MAP!!!!!!!!
3. Time stamping did not exist. I had no idea when he was doing this journey...
Those 3 things are of great great importance when writing a travelogue motorcycle journey book !!!!!!
I really enjoyed reading about the day to day adventures travelling through all the countries, especially Russia. The author appears to be able to handle just about any situation and was seemingly well prepared for the journey (well, maybe could have been a bit more mechanical!)... Enjoyed reading about his interactions with other cultures. I would have liked to know more about how the author prepared for his journey and his choices of equipment, motorcycle, etc.
great read. Enjoyed it from cover to cover, especially if you like motorcycling, but not really necessary to enjoy this book.
